Pennsylvania police tackle aggressive drivers: March 19-April 29

Pennsylvania law enforcement is taking tough action against aggressive drivers. It is implementing a series of targeted campaigns, with the goal of reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities connected to aggressive driving.

What is aggressive driving?

Aggressive driving refers to unsafe behavior behind the wheel, which typically demonstrates disregard for other drivers on the road. If you run a red light, make a left turn from the right-hand lane or drive unsafely close behind another car on the road, these are all indicators of aggressive driving. For PennDOT to consider a crash to be related to aggressive driving, at least two aggressive driving conditions must be present.

What are the campaigns?

The campaigns are known as Aggressive Driving Waves, and they're in force all across the state. The first such wave was conducted in October and November of 2017. Over this four-week period, 234 municipal law enforcement agencies participated, resulting in nearly 11,000 arrests or citations:

· Of these, the majority of citations-more than 6,300-were related to speeding.

· The second highest number of citations-around 850-was for drivers who disregarded traffic signs of signals.

· There were 210 arrests.

The second Aggressive Driving Wave is underway now: from March 19 through April 29. This time, even more municipal law enforcement agencies are taking part. This second wave is specifically targeting the following aggressive driving behaviors:

· Driving above the speed limit

· Driving too fast for roadway conditions

· Tailgating

· Driving unsafely in a work zone

· Distracted driving

· Failing to pass on the left
