Child custody battles are tough for everyone involved. You may feel as though you’re constantly on edge, and you may wonder how the kids are really faring. There are steps you can take to try to keep things on track so that the stress is minimal during this time.

One of the most important things to do is to remember that your children are the focus. You can’t try to make things harder for your ex or punish them in any form because this can harm the kids. Instead, make every decision based on what your children need.

As you are talking about things related to custody, don’t try to garner sympathy by bringing up your ex’s shortcomings. The exception to this is if there was abuse that would directly impact the children. The court does need to know if your ex is mistreating the kids. If you make this type of claim, be prepared to have to show proof of your claims or to be able to back them up in some manner.

You have to remain realistic as you try to work out the terms of the parenting plan arrangement. Remember that the rules and conditions you propose will impact you and not only your ex. Make sure that the guidelines and intent are clearly conveyed so that there aren’t any misunderstandings down the road.

Everything you and your ex determine about child custody, including the parenting time schedule and decision-making, should be included in the plan. The more detailed this document, the better your children might fare.
